Sweet and juicy strawberries are one of the most loved fruit.
They are cultivated in the whole temperate zone and in colder part of subtropical zone. The biggest producer of strawberries are the United States, and Poland is on the 7thplace. However, Pomerania has its significant contribution in promoting the fruit, because it is our truskawka kaszubska (kaszëbskô malëna) was registered as Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).
Strawberries are actually the combination of two species of wild strawberries done 300 years ago. They are juicy, aromatic, fleshy and sweet, and what is more, they contain a number of healthy nutrients. 100 grams provides total daily requirement for vitamin C, it is also a good source of vitamins A and E and from B group. There are vital microelements, especially calcium, phosphorus and iron. Thanks to these elements strawberries have antidepressant properties, they protect from anaemia and diseases caused by oxidative stress such as some cancers. They also enhance beauty of skin, hair and nails. Strawberries are recommended to diabetics and people who want to lose weight due to few calories, much fiber and ability to regulate the level of carbohydrates.
Moreover, they possess diuretic and base-forming qualities being beneficial for those who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis and kidney diseases. Strawberry juice can kill bacteria almost as efficiently as garlic or onion. There are recently researches showing their anti-virus activity, as well. But we cannot forget about strawberries as a great aphrodisiac together with a champagne!
Their values and taste can be presented in many ways. Although strawberries are excellent alone, they also make exquisite compositions with other products. Traditionally we use them in desserts for example with rhubarb baked under shortbread or with wild fruits served with whipped vanilla cream. We can prepare a hot soup or a kind of strawberry gazpacho, refreshing milk cocktail or smoothie. But strawberries make also a great ingredient of salads for instance with ricotta and avocado. Nowadays it is very fashionable to add them to meat dishes, for example, as a sauce.
